Darilyn Moyer @DarilynMoyer
@womeninmedchat A1 #WomenInMedicine chat: We need to push ourselves away from our “similarity” networks and reach to all. Like with patient care, we need to be supportive and get to know everyone. Ask people to tell you their story,it’s amazing how we have more similarities than differences.

@womeninmedchat A1 #WomenInMedicine chat- make it a point to ask attendees to a meeting, social gathering to bring a plus 1! We recently had a WIM in Philly and had a wonderfully diverse group of women in healthcare from a variety of healthcare settings and life choices.
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat There's a constant trying to have correct or situate ppl to who you are & what family means to you. Part of me thinks its exhausting and have stopped telling people my family situation. But the flip side of that, it upholds this sense of ‘me’ that I'm not. #WomeninMedicine

Nadia Jamil, M.D. @NadiaJamilMD
@womeninmedchat A2. Assumptions about time off- physicians who aren’t married or don’t have kids (yet) may be assumed or pressured to work holidays. Even those from different religions may not celebrate Christmas itself- but it’s a day off with family that most have off! #WomenInMedicine
Carrie Bernard MD she/her @carriedbernard
@womeninmedchat A2 #WomenInMedicine We need to be mindful that some may be hesitant to be open about non-traditional families as not all spaces feel safe. We must do our part to create safety.
Rakhee K. Bhayani, MD @RakheeBhayaniMD
@womeninmedchat A2: Assumptions about their support networks and family structure. Possibly feeling excluded in conversations if they don't feel like they are understood/valued. #WomenInMedicine
Kari Sampsel @KariSampsel
@NadiaJamilMD @womeninmedchat Totally! I work nights on Christmas Eve even though I celebrate it and have young kids. It works for our family right now! #WomenInMedicine
meshmd @msmemesha
@womeninmedchat A2: Childcare childcare childcare for those who already have children - I think of the single parent who’s resources (physical and financial) can be a huge issue. Societal bias I’m sure is daunting. Again if employer benefits vary this can be a stressor #womeninmedicine
Sanjana Mathur @teaandreverie
@womeninmedchat A1. It’s about being mindful I think. I remember making it a point to work on calls every Father’s Day. A senior tried to brush me off one year by asking if I don’t prefer to go home to celebrate w/ my dad. All I could muster was a firm, “he’s dead” & walked off. #WomenInMedicine
Jen Readlynn, MD, FHM (she/her) @jenreadlynn

@womeninmedchat A1: There are tons of different support systems—friends, pets, colleagues/coworkers, partners, extended family... I think the very first step would be to not make any assumptions and to not judge others. #WomenInMedicine
Darilyn Moyer @DarilynMoyer
@womeninmedchat A2 #WomenInMedicine chat: not being included in networks- as a working mom in a sea of neighbors/friends who didn’t work outside the home, I was often left out of activities, meetings. Several of us advocated to get school meetings, committee meetings alternated to include us.

Nadia Jamil, M.D. @NadiaJamilMD
@aoglasser @womeninmedchat ^ this! Different cultures/families value relationships differently! I haven’t had living grandparents since ‘97 so have considered my mom’s uncle (my great-uncle I guess) to be like my grandfather and called him that. My residency respected that when he passed #WomenInMedicine
Annie Massart @Annie_Massart_
@womeninmedchat 2/ A2: Exclusion is a huge challenge for those in the LGBTQ community where acknowledging your partner carries potential for being judged & excluded from opportunities. #WomenInMedicine
Maria Jose Hernandez Woodbine @Mariajose_hw
@womeninmedchat A1. Advocating for mental health is a key way to be inclusive because some healthcare workers may have no support system at all. And colleagues could make a huge difference when showing support. #WomenInMedicine
Suzan White, DO @suzanwhitedo
@womeninmedchat A2. A worst case scenario would be to not feel safe, to fear judgment from others at work. Less obvious bias may come up around scheduling shifts/ vacations due to bias/ misperceptions #WomenInMedicine

Annie Massart @Annie_Massart_
@jifrankl @womeninmedchat It's definitely something we all grew up doing in a way that reinforced gender norms and heteronormative relationships. I just stick to "spouse" if someone mentions a partner at home and allow them to share more if they want to. #WomenInMedicine
Sue Bornstein @sue_bornstein

@Annie_Massart_ @womeninmedchat A3: #WomenInMedicine Be socially aware and teach. When someone says they can’t do something or decline an invitation maybe explore or keep the invite open and express an openness got others (eg partner, visiting parents, visiting step kids). By being an example you teach others.

@ccardyDNP @womeninmedchat I definitely often feel that way. Then I noticed that people absolutely LIT UP when I asked how their kids are doing. Even if our colleagues are having a rough day, being given the opportunity to think about & brag about their loved ones is often a boost. #WomenInMedicine

@Annie_Massart_ @womeninmedchat Very true! I was writing up my physician bio last week and went through 50 different bios as examples, none of which mentioned being LGBT-friendly. It’s not something often brought up at work either, so I definitely can see how it can be alienating. #WomenInMedicine
