Charlotte Durand @char_durand
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1: I’m only PGY2 but I definitely know that there are certain things that aren’t allowed to be asked in interviews. A credit to the teaching we have here from @ama_media via the @amaq_cdt junior doctor conference. #womeninmedicine
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat @petradMD @NatashaNDave Hi! Bonnie, IM, busy with bedtime for three busy girls in DE #WomenInMedicine
Samira Farouk, MD, MSCR @ssfarouk
Samira Farouk, transplant nephrologist @ISMMSKidney and fan of @NatashaNDave #WomenInMedicine
Briana Christophers, PhD @BriChristophers
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1. What strikes me most about the replies to #QuestionsIveBeenAskedAsAWoman is how many are related to women’s roles outside of being an individual, as though a candidate needs to be contextualized despite all qualifications & things she brings to the table #WomenInMedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1. It is appalling that this keeps happening, but it does not surprise me, as I hear this REGULARLY from my residents who are applying for fellowship. Questions that violate match policy all the time, and more so in women, multiple-fold. #WomenInMedicine
John Roberts @John_K_Roberts
RT @Nephro_Sparks: Read @NatashaNDave’s article in @KidneyNews discussing important issues facing women applying for jobs (also occurs for residency and fellowship) #womeninmedicine chat happening now @womeninnephro https://t.co/PFKc3AaNQd
Erika Hamilton, MD @ErikaHamilton9
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave So tired of these perceptions, biases, comments. And continue to be surprised that when they are said to someone, others just stay silent. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1: I have to tell you, I got hit with far more of these questions when I interviewed for orthopaedic residency than any point thereafter. I admit it pissed me off. Being questioned about things no man would ever be asked is not ok. #WomenInMedicine
Dr. Lillian Erdahl MD @LillianErdahlMD
RT @womeninmedchat: Alright let's get started with Q1: Alright let's get started with Q1: Please take the next 10 minutes to read @NatashaNDave's article https://t.co/ZD9GWUeNDf and check out the tweets under #QuestionsIveBeenAskedAsAWoman. @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1: If you encounter these types of questions, how can you learn if this interviewer is the exception or if this speaks to the culture of the institution? #WomenInMedicine
Naomi, BSc MHSc @NaomiNerdsOut
#womeninmedicine Q1 It, unfortunately, doesn't surprise me. I've been cut down in front of clients at meetings; my best friend dyed her hair because so few people were taking her seriously and she thought that she couldn't change her gender but could at least not be blonde (1/?2
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave More A1: I would love to see a man asked when he’s thinking about having kids in an interview. #NotGonnaHappen #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave “Your reference mentioned you have 3 children; how do you plan on balancing this job and all your kids?” I am curious how many or if #HeForShe have been asked this before? #WomeninMedicine
Jennie Lin 👩🏻‍⚕️🧬 @jenniejlin
A1) I think these #QuestionsIveBeenAskedAsAWoman can be snuck in as "friendly" questions, but how much are these Q's really for optimizing recruitment strategy (to recruit you) vs make a decision against you? #WomenInMedicine
Indu Partha, MD FACP @InduPartha
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave #womeninmedicine (2/2). That question bags me to this day.
Jennie Foster, MD MPH @DrJenFos
@char_durand @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave @ama_media @amaq_cdt A1. Surprised at how rampant this still is. In my experience, most of the top efficient people at work are parents. #womeninmedicine
Sonya Tang Girdwood 鄧 智佳, MD, PhD @STangGirdwood
#womeninmedicine: on the #interview trail or starting it soon? You might be asked some inappropriate questions - article in tweet is a good summary of the realities women face during interviews and provides tips on handling those questions.
Kanika Monga, MD @DrKanikaMonga
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1: Thanks @NatashaNDave for the article! The conversation is so relevant. I'm happy that we are talking about it -- and for this platform. It is not acceptable regardless of the intent. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@aoglasser @ErikaHamilton9 @womeninmedchat @petradMD @NatashaNDave The only good thing is that my daughter (the first born) is almost never sick anymore. I see a light at the end of the plague tunnel! #WomenInMedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave I think there is a very small minority of people that may ask these questions without malice or ill intent. For the remainder, they are asking as a way to factor this into a hiring equation, which is not legal and therefore should not be asked. #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave "It wasn’t until I was being interviewed that I realized some practices didn’t see me as a physician. They saw me as a woman." This sentence stings and resonates with me the most. #womeninmedicine
Michelle Rheault @rheault_m
@BriChristophers @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1 Yes. So many of these questions relate to child care. Men could easily be asked about the same issues, they just aren't. #WomenInMedicine
Petra Dolman, M.D.🇨🇦 @petradMD
@Nephro_Sparks @DukeKidney Gald you could join us! #womeninmedicine

@NatashaNDave @womeninmedchat @petradMD Thank you so much for your article, thoughts, and moderating the chat tonight! #womeninmedicine
Lauren K. Shawn, MD @lkshawn
@BeyondTheCoat @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave I really like the suggestion to ask to the interviewer to explain why they’re asking . Addresses the issue in a less confrontational way but also forces them to be transparent. #womeninmedicine

Stacy Goldbaum, DO @WhiteCoatDiary
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1. I was told by mentors to be prepared for some of these questions and at one point had the thought to interview without my engagement/wedding rings on to try to even the playing field. This should never have been a thought in my mind. #womeninmedicine
Women In Nephrology @womeninnephro
RT @czchou: @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1: @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1: If you encounter these types of questions, how can you learn if this interviewer is the exception or if this speaks to the culture of the institution? #WomenInMedicine
Dia Waguespack @d_r_waguespack
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1. Tools to help be better prepared for any situation are crucial. Talking about it and bringing it to this forum are the good steps #WomenInMedicine
Sonya Tang Girdwood 鄧 智佳, MD, PhD @STangGirdwood
@ShreyaTrivediMD @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave My question is why did the reference bring up the number of children in the first place? When I write recommendation letters, I don’t mention personal information; would think it would be the same if being called about an applicant #womeninmedicine
Briana Christophers, PhD @BriChristophers
@ShreyaTrivediMD @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave Ironic because when they get defensive it’s always “we don’t see gender, we don’t see race, we just want the best candidates.” Yet there are discrepancies in who gets asked what and how they are treated during interviews #WomenInMedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1. This puts any woman in an awkward position during an interview. That is frustrating. If the woman defers to answer, she is avoidant. If she answer the questions, then they are held against her. How is this fair??? It is not. #WomenInMedicine

@BriChristophers #womeninmedicine Right! Like I'm generally pretty open, too. But if I'm talking about work and then am having to debate if I feel safe enough to come out, that's a huge problem. It's not "an innocent question."
Ben Humphreys @HumphreysLab

Stacy Goldbaum, DO @WhiteCoatDiary
@jenniejlin I have felt naive thinking these are friendly questions and then go home later and realized it was deeper than that #womeninmedicine
Women In Nephrology @womeninnephro
RT @lkshawn: @BeyondTheCoat @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave I really like the suggestion to ask to the interviewer to explain why they’re asking . Addresses the issue in a less confrontational way but also forces them to be transparent. #womeninmedicine
Dr. Lillian Erdahl MD @LillianErdahlMD
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1 Like @NatashaNDave & others, I still regularly hear from #WomenInMedicine at various levels being asked illegal ❓s during interviews. I don’t hear of men being asked them. Cultural & societal message is still that child-rearing is #womenswork & inconvenient to the workplace
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@BeyondTheCoat @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave I’m not sure it will ever end. I think the best thing we can do to prepare trainees for this line of questioning is to let them know it will happen. If you expect it you can be prepared for it. #WomenInMedicine

Great intial thoughts everyone! Now it's time for Q2: Have you or someone you know been asked inappropriate questions during interviews, meetings, at work etc? Please explain what was asked and in what setting? #WomenInMedicine #QuestionsIveBeenAskedAsAWoman https://t.co/5HtBvEhjvU
Dr. Jennifer Chen, MD FAAP 林 明 堯 @DrJenChen4kids
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave Gah, forgot the #womeninmedicine tag 😅
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@WhiteCoatDiary @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave I have had trainees go on fellowship interviews with no rings, simply to avoid or minimize being asked questions about plans to have kids, being asked about partner’s job, etc. Unfortunate that these are things trainees have to even think about. #WomenInMedicine
Hanni Stoklosa, MD MPH @hstoklosa
@darakass 2 of my female physician colleagues also experienced this (asked for credentials) on two separate @TurkishAirlines flights in the last month. In 1 one case there was a male doc who also volunteered and was not asked the same questions. #WomenInMedicine #thatsbias
Natasha N. Dave @NatashaNDave
@czchou @womeninmedchat Yes absolutely, I def thought about the culture of the practice if illegal questions were being asked during the interview.. #WomenInMedicine
Jennie Lin 👩🏻‍⚕️🧬 @jenniejlin
@BeyondTheCoat @lkshawn @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave And I come from different perspective as an unmarried woman without human children (2 fur babies drive me crazy). The questions still make me uneasy bc I wonder if they are trying to pigeon hole me as someone who doesn't fit into their culture. #WomenInMedicine
Lauren Kuwik MD @LaurenKuwikMD
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave I was lucky enough to see this great piece when it first circulated. Shocking that it still happens but it really shouldn’t shock any of us. It has happened to all of us. Job applicants should be asked job applicant questions. #womeninmedicine
Women In Nephrology @womeninnephro
@HumphreysLab @WUNephrology Thanks for joining us Ben! #WomenInMedicine
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1. I was incredibly naive back in my interviewing days. I think I thought the men (and I sadly don't recall a single female interviewer) were being friendly and interested in my family and my life... ☹️#womeninmedicine
Natasha N. Dave @NatashaNDave
@womeninmedchat A2: You've read about my interview experience but unfortunately that is not the only time I've been asked inappropriate Qs. During training- I've been asked about my relationship status, my "biological clock"/child bearing plans #QuestionsIveBeenAskedAsAWoman #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@czchou @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave That’s an important question. Seems as though the interviewee would have to talk to others and see if this culture permeates through to other interviewers #WomenInMedicine
Dr. Lillian Erdahl MD @LillianErdahlMD
@czchou @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave Also consider asking interviewer why they are asking. Perhaps their intent is to connect you with other physician parents in practice to discuss community support. A better way for them is to say: do you have any questions about resources outside of the hospital?#womeninmedicine
Dr. Lillian Erdahl MD @LillianErdahlMD

Emily Tharp, MD @EmilyTharpMD
@womeninmedchat Patient asked if i was married. Said no. Asked if i had a boyfriend, said no. ??Asked WHY NOT?? #WomenInMedicine
Erika Hamilton, MD @ErikaHamilton9
@womeninmedchat My infertility was blamed on “well you had other priorities getting through training, so not really surprising you’re having trouble now. Price you pay”. I was 29. #WomenInMedicine
Jennie Lin 👩🏻‍⚕️🧬 @jenniejlin
@BeyondTheCoat @lkshawn @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave Regardless of children or no children, the answer bears no relevance to my competence and talent. #WomenInMedicine
Ben Humphreys @HumphreysLab
@NatashaNDave @womeninmedchat very discouraging #womeninmedicine

@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave A1. In hindsight I am sure they were thinking more, what is this mom going to do when her children are sick...? #WomenInMedicine
Indu Partha, MD FACP @InduPartha
@womeninmedchat A2: Thankfully, no, not recently. It seems I may be the exception. #WomenInMedicine
Lauren Kuwik MD @LaurenKuwikMD
@lkshawn @BeyondTheCoat @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave Also a great reply is “What do you mean by that?” Although this is so tough when interviewing as we face the double edged asword of being too assertive as #womeninmedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@DrFNA @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave I did have a male trainee get asked by every interviewer at one institution about when he planned to have kids. It made him as uncomfortable as it does for women. Enough so that he told me. I know the fellowship. Wonder how that program feels knowing I know! #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@womeninmedchat A1: I’ve been asked inappropriate questions in interviews as well as in conversations with senior faculty. Sadly, senior women are just as guilty as men when it comes to asking these questions. #WomenInMedicine

@aoglasser @lkshawn @BeyondTheCoat @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave But if so then it’s something that could be brought up once the person has the position! Or the information could be offered equally to everyone interviewing at a group session rather than putting folks on the spot/making the disclose #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat A2. This more global but recently I was in India and a young talented, overqualified woman told me at every job interview, she is asked "Are you planning to get married?" bc the assumption is still if you are married, then you'll quit ur job and be a housewife. #WomeninMedicine
Sam Kant @kantsmd
RT @Nephro_Sparks: Looking forward to supporting @NatashaNDave and @womeninnephro tonight for the #womeninmedicine chat #HeForShe 🙌
Grace Oliver, MD @GraceOliverMD
A1 Nobody has asked me anything gender specific on residency interviews as far as I could tell 🤨 A few asked if I am couples matching and I just say “nope, just me & my 🐈 and she’s not picky” #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@AmyOxentenkoMD @womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave It is an uncomfortable question. I think what irks me so much as a working mom is that people expect you to work as if you don’t have kids and raise kids as if you don’t work. That is not ok. #WomenInMedicine
Natasha N. Dave @NatashaNDave
@DrFNA @womeninmedchat True, illegal questions can come from both men and women #WomenInMedicine
Shana Zucker, MD, MPH, MS @ShanaInMedicine
@womeninmedchat @NatashaNDave But saying “I’m not comfortable” seems to have the potential to cause the most tension, and not necessarily the kind that starts conversation. Thoughts? #womeninmedicine 2/2
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430

#womeninmedicine Q2 I don't know where to start. Locations: In job interviews. In a research study. In the middle of a separate meeting. At a conference. At a work lunch. In classes. By interns, by colleagues, by potential bosses, by absolute and complete strangers. (1/2)
Naomi, BSc MHSc @NaomiNerdsOut
#womeninmedicine What was asked: "You gonna marry your partner?" "If you end up with a girl which one would have kids?" "Going for MHSc so you don't have school when you have kids?" "Will your bf distract you from work?" "Sorry, I didn't expect you to be smart with how you look!"
